You’re looking for an alternative to juice and seltzer. This kava drink is a great way to relax after a long day.

Most people will remember the year 2020 as a time of intense stress (to put it mildly). The next best thing is a bar cart. Since we can’t all be cryogenically froze until the end of time, it’s often the only option. There’s nothing inherently wrong with drinking alcohol in moderation. However, Americans have been drinking more and more of it. We could all benefit from having some alternative stress-coping tools in our toolkit. Rachelle Robinett, herbalist and holistic coach Rachelle’s favorite, offers a healthier alternative in the latest episode Plant-Based: an Old Fashioned without alcohol made of (what else?) plants.

Robinett’s mocktail is inspired by the classic cocktail, which has a lot of flavors like orange, cherry and bitters, but replaces alcohol with Kava, a herb that is traditionally used for its relaxing effects. Robinett says that this is her go-to herbal mocktail. She enjoys it every day.

Robinett claims that natives from the South Pacific Islands have been using Kava for thousands of year as a physical relaxant or social lubricant. It does not affect your mind. It has only recently been adopted by U.S. Wellness consumers. She says that depending on the strain, kava can be more relaxing or euphoric. “But in general, it encourages GABA production, which is a neurotransmitter we use to relax.

Any liquid herbal extract (aka tincture) can be mixed with sparkling waters to create a healthier cocktail alternative. Robinett suggests that you think about how you drink alcohol – to relax, calm your mind, enjoy a culinary experience, socialize with others, etc. – and then look for herbs that have similar effects. She explains that herbs can replace alcohol in all the ways that we use it.

Old Fashioneds are my favorite cocktail, so I’m a convert. Watch the video and steal Robinett’s recipe for outdoor dinner parties, happy hours or even Twitter doomscroll. Cheers!
